My Left Arm

Being left-handed doesn't matter in pottery. You really use both hands and pretty much need them equally. I think I worked my left arm a little too much, however, and now my arm is in a sling. I've described my symptoms to just about anyone who will listen and the consensus seems to be tennis elbow. I can't even lift a glass of water without pain. And, as much as I'd like a medical opinion, I don't have enough health insurance to go into the office to hear a doctor tell me to rest my arm, take ibuprofen and ice it. So, I am being my own doctor for a few more weeks and following my own orders.

That leads to the artistic angst of today's post. When I can't get into the studio to work (which is often for a mother) I dream and think and ponder. I think about what I will create when my arm is better. I'd start drawing out pictures, but writing hurts. Typing is about the only thing that doesn't hurt. I'm thinking about how boring it is to make bowls and plates and what I really want to make now is funky stuff that is nowhere near round. I'm thinking about pots with texture and spriggings and undulating edges and things like that. As a matter of fact, whenever I see a pot that looks hand-built I go positively ga-ga over it. I want to make some pinch pots, and a tall hand-built tea pot, and some funky flower vases. I am dreaming of a lamp, with texture and what looks like flowers or sea shells sprigged on it. Maybe even a lizard.

I don't know if the day-dreaming is helping me or driving me nuts. I've been doing a lot of one-armed cooking lately, trying to be creative in the kitchen. I've also been driving my family nuts by doing little projects around the house that are mostly accomplished by my ordering people who have two arms to do my bidding. I'm pretty sure they want my arm to get better even more than I do!

We had a great time today at the festival. One of the best things about it is seeing everyone there. I had a few sales and even a couple of store owners asking about having my pots in their stores. Carly stayed and helped me all day. It was great having her there to help me.

Me, standing behind my displays. I tried to make them colorful and interesting. Everyone commented most on my little plastic artichoke candles! I could have sold a dozen of them!
